It is a good idea to have in arsenal this survival tool. You can see here nice idea / DIY project , how to make cheap purifier from a simple camping stainless steel water bottle. However I'd recommend as a first step using simple filter made from sand and as bottom layer activated charcoal. You can find this product very cheaply in aqua-zoo shops. (Activated charcoal is used in filtration and in emergency treatment of certain kinds of poisoning. It helps prevent the poison from being absorbed from the stomach into the body.) Fancy press fitting on lid isn't actually required in order to make this project. I must add that I don't recommend using any life straws! They can be dangerous if water is heavy polluted since they don't have a tight seal and they don't filter all bacteria and viruses.
